An article about the cemetery is placed after the list.

Argentine / Whitehead Cemetery

BY BEVERLY WHEATLEY

The Argentine cemetery like many other smaller cemeteries, started out as a family affair.

Originally known as the Whitehead Cemetery it was started by Halsey Whitehead, one of Argentine's pioneers,131 years ago when he dug the first grave to bury his little two-year old daughter, Rebecca Jane, May 18, 1838, According to information in an article by Whitehead's great granddaughter, Mrs. Otie McCarthy "with help from the neighbors, the Lobdell's and the Bennett's, a walnut casket was made, and she was carried into the woods and buried." Shortly after the death of Rebecca Jane. Halsey and Nancy Whitehead lost another child who was buried close by.

The Whiteheads had moved to Argentine in 1837 from Bloomfield township with seven children. They had lived in Bloomfield township since 1832, coming there from Seneca county in New York State. They had decided that the land around Orchard Lake was too poor to farm and moved on to Argentine.

Another son, 17 year old Andrew Jackson, died a year later on May 27, 1839 and was buried near the others, From then on as close friends and neighbors died. thev were buried. without charge on the Whitehead land, where the cemetery was started. It was later donated to Argentine Township. Whitehead served as one of the first Justices of the peace in Argentine township.

MANY PIONEERS of Argentine Township and their familles and descendants are buried in the cemetery. This ineludes James H. Murray, known as the first settler in the village, and William Lobdell, who many times is also accorded the distinction of being the first to settle in Argentine. The two men both came to Argentine in March of 1836.

Murray, from near Rochester, N.Y. took up 440 acre tract of land in November, 1835,to secure the water rights at Argentine. He moved his family there in 1836, built the original dam and erected a sawmill that was put in operation the same season

At the same time that Murray was building his dam, his neighbor William Bennett, who lived about two mile south, was also building a darn near "Bennett's Bridge

However, Murray's dam was compieted first and because he had secured a legal water right to "flood all the land necessary at Argentine, he flooded Bennett's dam-site. He then talked Bennett into helping him With his various undertaldngs in the Argentine settlement.

Rumor has it that Bennett was resentful towards hIs more successful business competitor. Reportedly, there were happenings such as a fire at the Murray mill and other incidents that were allegedly believed to have been contrived by the less successful of the two. Bennett also built a hotel at Bennett's bridge that was later moved to Argentine. Bennett Lake was named after him.

Murray built a grist mill in Argentine. His flour was drawn to Detroit by wagons over White Lake road. On the return trip he would bring back merchandise for a store which he operated opposite the mill, Murray was also first postmaster of the Argentine post office located at his grist rntll, It has been written that one of his outstanding charactertstlcs was his political parttsanship and power of persuasion. Through his influence, Argentine throughout 40 years of his history was the Democratic party's stronghold of the county. Murray died Feb. 11,1872.

LOBDELL, came from Auburn, N. Y. and built a log house on his land bordertng on the lake which now carries his name. Since he had a span of horses and a wagon, he assisted in bringing in the possessions of other settlers. There were excellent springs on the Lobdell farm which never froze over in the wtnter, History has it that Indians often camped on the spot; Marsh hay was cut and stacked for winter use, the only kind available. Lobdell died May 19, 1851 at the age of 52. His wife Debora Is also buried in the Argentine cemetery as well as a son and daughter, Andrew J. and Esther.

GEORGE G. SUTHERLAND, who came to the village of Argentine in 1848 at the age of 22, laid the foundation of its manufacturing activities. This Ine Iudod wagon, buggies, sleighs and cutters as well as the framework of farm machinery, and the wooden ware used in the home in the country and towns alike-at that time

The sutherland Boat Works and Planntng M1ll stood on the banks of the mtll pond in Argentine. It was destroyed by fire about 1905.

George Sutherland died Nov. 29, 1896 His brother castle Sutherland took up 160 acres of land in November' 1854 and another 160 in January 1855. He built a stone blacksmith shop on the west side of the river near George's planing mill..

Their father, Col. Sutherland, had located in washtenaw County. There he built an arbor and according to "Ellis History of Genesee County· trained grape vines to cover it as a shady resting place for his Wife, Ann. As the communtty grew, the settlement was named "Ann Arbor." Col. sutherland's mother was, a sister of P. T. Barnum, the great showman.

ANOTHER TOMBSTONE reads "Our Little Charlie, Died March 25, 1861, age 1 yr. 4 mos. and 24 days, son of Isaac Jr. and Mary wixom," This infant ciliid was a grandson of Dr. Isaac Wixom who was a colorful figure in the history of Argentine.

Argentine's first physician, Dr. Wixom moved there in 1845. In June of that year, near Fenion, he performed the successful hip joint amputation on record

In the year 1846 he surveyed and platted the village of Argentine. He also took over and completed the bullding of the hotel started and moved to the village by William Bennett. Under the Doctor's proprietorship it became known as one of the finest hotels in Genesee County. Dr. Wixom also operated a grist mill and general store. He donated the site for the non-sectarian church. However, the Methodist later held the title by deed of property

Dr. Wixom was instrumental in founding the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint. His granddaughter Emma "Nevada" Wixom was an opera singer of world reknown In 1880-90. Dr. Wixom later moved to Fenton in 1869 where he died.

MANY DESCENDENTS of the Whitehead family are buried in theArgentine cemetery. In the early years, as evidenced by the grave markers; many young children and babies were laid to rest there. Add1t1onal property enlarging the cemetery was : later purchased by Argentine township.

Located behind and to the north of' McIntyre's Plumbing and Heating the more than a century old cemetery; can be seen from Silver Lake road if one looks close.

A Sign for the cemetery has recently been made and will soon be erected marking the entrance of the cemetery off Silver Lake road just west of the McIntyre store

Argentine Cemetery Started by Whitehead Family
Fenton Independent, Fenton, Michigan, Thursday, August 14, 1969

The more than a century old Argentine cemetery is located in a quiet spot, just north of Silver Lakee road near Seymour road.

Many old families whose names are perpetuated in those of roads or lakes, are buried in the Argentine Cemetery, including the Lahring family, and in the background the Whitehead family plot.

Detroit, Michigan

Dear Mrs. Wheatley,

Your fine article on the Argentine Cemetery which appeared in your paper of August 14th was very well done. Both you and the Independent are to be commended.

I'm glad to know a sign at the entrance will be erected soon.

Much more can be said of this historical resting place.

All descendants of Halsey and Nancy (Smith) Whitehead are Mayflower descendants--Nancy was a direct descendant of four Mayflower passengers-namely Stephen Hopkins and daughter Constance, also Thomas Rogers and son Joseph, (Ref: Mayflower Descendants, Vol 3 P 68-69), Burton Historical Library, Detroit, Michigan. Research on the Whitehead family (for many years a pleasant hobby--) enabled me to become a member of Michigan Mayflower Society.

Perhaps no historical cemetery in Michigan contains as many such descendants.

Nancy and Halsey's parents also took part in many colonial wars. Her father Asa Smith was a revolutionary patriot - his brother died during the bitter siege at Valley Forge.

Halsey's father Aaron had been a minuteman in New Jersey-- later a member of the "Green Mountain Boys of Vermont."

Halsey, himself served in the war of 1812, In his "Declaration of Soldiers for Pension" filed in Genesee County April 6, 1874, It states he "stood ground" at Fort Niagara, N. Y. He states also his abode at this time is Argentine, Michigan (Ref: Copy from National Archieves Record group no. 15A).

In a centennial volume of papers by the Seneca Falls, N Y Historical Society, there is an article written by Nancy Whitehead's brother Jason Smith, January 1865. He tells of the family life in Bristol Vt. near Virginia where Nancy was born. His mother's parents, the Travers; had been "Torys" and were driven by the "Whigs" from New York State to Vermont in 1803. With seven children and the mother heavy with child, the family set out to return to New York state. Nancy was nine years old at this time. It was in February so they might cross Lake Champlain on the ice.

They had two ox carts with all their worldly belongings. All walked except mother .and two younger children. After cold and bitter hardships they reached Tyre in Seneca bounty, N. Y. Shortly after, mother gave birth to twins. The family survived that winter and spring by eating boiled corn.

My own note: This move must have given Nancy a good background for her migration to Bloomfield township--thence to Argentine i.n Genesee County after her marriage to Halsey Whitehead in New York state in 1817. (They came to Michigan in 1832.) I'm sure there are many adventure stories lying behind those who rest in Argentine cemetery. I would love to see more young people become interested in their historical background. It's all there so close to you.

Argentine is dear to my heart. When I go there Memorial day--I find it all but deserted--descendants of those old pioneers living so close find it impossible now to place flags on their veteran's graves. The township does do a good job of caretaking and has kept it from going into oblivion, as many old historical resting places have been allowed to do. One I have in mind, the old Burgess Cemetery near Byron-though I am glad to hear from a younger descendant they are now trying to restore it. In this cemetery lies the remains of a brother of Halsey Whitehead, Asher, who died in 1854. Ref: First Presbyterian church records, Morristown, N. J.

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. Otie (Hoagland) McCarthy
Great-grandaughter of Halsey Whitehead
