The Burgess Cemetery is located on the site of the farm of James A. and Susan Ann Burgess. The farm was purchased 28 February 1848 from Caleb Rice by Susan Ann Reed, Wayne County, New York. It is presumed that Susan was at this time the widow of Charles Reed.

Susan Ann Reed and her children, Charles Henry, Sarah Ann, Nelson Zelotes, Hiram Lafayette, Samuel B. and Susan J. A. moved from Wayne County, New York to Burns Township.

At some time either just prior to or after the move Susan Ann married James A. Burgess. They had two sons, William James and Benjamin H.

Susan was born Susan White in Tyre, Seneca County, New York, 28 February 1818 and died 21 August 1913 in Meridien Township, Ingham County, Michigan.

Tradition says that there is no one buried in this cemetery who is not related to Susan and it is believed that Asher Whitehead was her uncle, but at this date this has not been proven.
